My Preliminary Exercise 

I undertook a preliminary exercice to practice filming and editing. Below is my task: 

I had to learn how to focus the camera, I ;learned how to bubble the tripod .
Before leaving class I learned how to use the canon 650 and the manfrotto tripod.
I understood the importance of getting the camera properly focussed.
My task is set out below:

FOUNDATION PRODUCTION PRACTICAL

A pizza delivery takes place. Person A delivers the pizza to person B.
Shot types and camera movements to include:

• tracking shot of person A on the way.
• pan as person A enters room.
• Over the shoulder shot to show person B greeting / talking
• over the shoulder shot to show person A's response
• shot reverse shot to show person B

Show that you can:

• Use a tripod to keep shots steady (bubble the tripod).
• Focus the camera. 
• Take care of the camera and tripod.
• Observe the 180 degree rule.  
• Edit the sequence to make meaning clear. (Tutorial here.)
• If you wish, you can add titles / sound to the edit. 

NEXT TASK: making a swede 

The problems I was faced with:

I knew I had to observe the 180 degree rule

I edited this by myself using iMovie.
I had to make sure all the clips conformed to the direct storyline we thought of.

Research: Delicatessen and Les Bleus de Ramville
Using the website The Art of the Title, we were able to discover as a class the numbers of interesting movie openings from all kind of genres. Today we focussed on two quite extraordinary openings, Delicatessen and Les Bleus de Ramville The reason why we found so much interest in both openings, was because each scene or sequence, had a special element which gave them a different artistic twist.

Delicatessen’s opening, seemed very well thought out and every frame included a special touch which made its competition (other movie openings) lacking of such originality. When the name of the director of photography, a vintage camera was used to show the name of “Darius Khondji”. I personally was quite impressed with the creativity found throughout the entire opening. I was rather stupefied at the idea of using a mirror reflection to give us the producer’s name. 

The mise en scene was quite gloomy a dirty, almost to interpret the surroundings mysterious attitude. The sepia filter gives the movie more of an edge and also makes it look more vintage and rustic which is quite appropriate in terms of mine en scene. The soft accordion music in the background followed by the camera’s movement, gives a humorous edge to the opening but the slow tempo of the music, creates some sort of uncertainty in what is about to appear next.  The dim lighting and shadows, also added to the sinister decor of the opening.  

Les Bleus de Ramville’s athletic yet very technical opening, is a completely different contrast then the opening Delicatessen’s opening. From the first few seconds, we can tell this is less of an obscure movie as we are presented with a young teenager athlete which indicates that this movie is more of a family based, warm hearted genre. 

The mise en scène is very different as we can see that most of the film sequences of the movie required quite a lot of lighting. Most shots seem to be close ups of either actions or specific pieces of equipment used to play ice hockey.

This movie opening seems to bring more of a cultural influence into its opening compared to delicatessen as it is heavily based on ice hockey which is traditionally Canadian.  This only increases the fact that both movies barely resemble each other, apart from having brilliant opening sequences.
